SMATE UNIT (Science, Mathematics &Technology Education)

The TESOL programme that is run at the NMMU is an internationally recognised, USA accredited, course that enables successful participants to teach English to speakers of other languages almost anywhere in the world. The engagement aspect of the programme focuses on interacting with disadvantaged members of the Walmer Township community, who are given free English lessons by the participants and their facilitators.

The SIT TESOL course prepares participants to be able to teach English to speakers of other languages, whether overseas or in South Africa. The course provides an opportunity to analyse how we learn a language and what contributes to learning. It is very much a collaborative approach with many learning opportunities which then become the basis for developing theories of learning.

The TESOL course is available on a full-time basis with daily classes over four weeks. However, a part-time option is also available. The part-time group starts with a full-time week from 08:00 to 17:30 daily and thereafter attendance is on two evenings a week and on Saturday mornings for another nine weeks.

Both courses are 130 hours and are taught by a committed TESOL team. Both part-time and full-time options are available from early January each year.

The total cost for the TESOL course is approximately R9500.

For information on the full-time option contact either Eileen or Jacqui (details below).

For information on the part-time option contact Sharon (details below).

Note:

Participants now have the option of getting five Master's credits in the American education system with the TESOL course. To take advantage of this option participants would need to register with World Learning's School for International Training and pay an additional $500 before starting on the TESOL course.
